Candidates offered provisional admission for the
2017/2018 academic session at the Lagos State
University, Ojo is currently in a rush to beat the
January deadline for extension of registration and
central screening exercise at the institution.
When our correspondent visited the university on
Monday, some of the newly admitted students were
seen hurrying, with folders containing their
credentials, to the MBA Building, venue of the
screening exercise, and other points on campus.
Officials at the venue told our correspondent that
some of them had arrived for the exercise as early
as 7.45am.
About 2,000 out of the 3,500 newly admitted
students, it was gathered, have presented
themselves for the screening since the deadline for
screening was announced.
Asked why they delayed in registering, most of
them blamed the increase in the acceptance fee and
the poor understanding of the new Joint Admission
and Matriculation Board Central Admission
Processing System.
The university recently increased the acceptance fee
payable by the new students from N10,000 to
N20,000, while its tuition fee remains at N25,000.
One of the new students, Ayoola Olumegbon, who
was admitted into the Faculty of Arts, said, “I
would have been here earlier for the screening, but
my parents just gave me money to pay the
acceptance fee. It was increased suddenly and they
had to add to the money they gave me before.”
Another student, whose name is Adebimpe, had
JAMB’s new admissions policy to blame. She said,
“The JAMB new policy actually confused me. I got a
message on my telephone saying that another
university had admitted me, while the LASU
admission was already there. We were confused
and did not know what to do until we got here.”

The spokesperson of the university, Mr Ademola
Adekoya, said that over 60 percent of the students
have been screened.
He explained that efforts were ongoing to resolve
the challenges encountered by some of the
students.
Martins said that the screening of new students,
which started on January 2, would end on Jan. 15,
adding that LASU offered 3,500 students provisional
admission for the 2017/2018 academic session.
He said, “The turnout has been very impressive and
they are likely to finish even before the deadline.
Before the week runs out, we hope to complete
screening exercise.”
